Pop-up Card for
Independence Day!
I hope your Independence Day weekend was relaxing and fun! I just couldn't stay away from my desk. I took turns between sitting at my desk planning out a couple cards for you and sitting in the sun and 90 degrees! I love the HEAT!
In preparation, I played around matching up colors of Distress Oxide inks. Without a doubt, I intended to use a color scheme of red, white and blue. But Cindy keeps telling me ¨If you're going to make one, you might as well make two or more to sell¨!

Appetizers
At first, I played with the inks. I wanted to create my color schemes.
Tried many different shades of red, white and blue |
I tried pairing:
Weathered Wood
Fossilized Amber
Faded Jeans
Aged Mahogany
then Squeezed Lemon, Pumice Stone, Barn Door, and Scattered Straw entered the mix! I decided on:
Tea Dye
Scattered Straw
Faded Jeans
Aged Mahogany Distress Oxide inks.
Tea Dye
Scattered Straw

Aged Mahogany Distress Oxide inks.
My second card had a different color scheme:
Pumice Stone
Tattered Rose
Scattered Straw
Please use any inks that you have available. I did not choose the Distress Oxides for any of their special properties. They just happen to be very accessible.
Soup and Salad
Using Simon Says Stamp´s Beautiful Day stamp set and the four paired patriotic inks, I randomly stamped the four smaller, detailed butterflies across two sheets of Neenah 80# cardstock cut into 4¨x 5 1/4¨ panels. Each butterfly is a different color. I layered them onto a black cardstock panel of 4 1/8¨x 5 3/8¨.
I used the same butterflies but repeated the process with the alternative color scheme. This was also done on a 4 1/4¨x 5 1/4¨ panel then layered onto a Simon Says Stamp´s Fog gray
4 1/8¨x 5 3/8¨ mat.

I black embossed the sentiment, ¨you make me feel like I can fly¨ onto the patriotic layered panel. ¨have a beautiful day¨ was black embossed onto the other layered panel. They were attached to the front of the card base.
On two other panels cut to 4 1/8¨x 5 3/8¨, I stamped butterflies using the two small solid stamps in the set.
I used a single color for each style of butterfly. I used Tea Dye and Scattered Straw on one set. I used Tattered Rose for one butterfly and Pumice Stone for another on the other panels. Remember odd numbers look best.
I added random flying swirls and attached the panels to the inside of the card.

The Main Course
The pop-up is a very simple device! Simply score a small scrap of white cardstock at 1/2 inch intervals starting at 1/2 inch. Then cut this piece of paper into strips, 2 1/2¨x 1/4¨. There should be 4 score marks on each strip.
Bend them into a cube. This is where I use a liquid adhesive. Art Glitter Glue dries quickly and clear. Proceed to glue two cubes together. This becomes one pop-up mechanism. You may only need one but I need two of these double cube mechanisms for the butterfly I am going to use inside. (I made four mechanisms, 8 cubes, to use on two cards.)
Making cubes into the pop-up mechanism |
Dessert!
I stamped the largest butterfly in the set twice onto white 80# Neenah cardstock with Memento Tuxedo Black ink. I did this for each card. I colored each set of butterflies, to match the colors of each card, with Copic markers. I used Wink of Stella Clear on the yellow outer part of each butterfly.
Coloring with Copic markers or use whatever you would like to color with! |
They were fussy cut with my Cutter Bee scissors. Using a pencil, I laid the butterflies tip to tip across the inside of the card and put a tiny mark where I will place the cubes. The upper and lower tips meet on the crease.
Double cube mechanism glued with the seam matching the crease inside the card. |
Glue a double cube mechanism on one mark. Match where the cubes are glued together with the crease of the card. Repeat with the second mechanism.
Glue the butterflies onto the tops of the cubes. The wings should touch tips and match the crease. Once the glue dries, close your card slowly and use your bone folder to bend the card easily.
Red, white and blue card inside |
I made a boo-boo and added the sentiment onto a separate piece and then added it to the card. |
I added a simple sentiment on the inside and
TA-DA, the pop-up card is finished!!
I added a few gems to give the outside some sparkle.
The hardest part of the cards was deciding colors to put together. I hope you will try this card design. It would make a darling birthday card for a child. Imagine their surprise when they open it!
